Belcanto, a meal in Chef Jose Avillez Lab

Belcanto - Suckling pig revisited credits Paulo Barata

In the week that this restaurant was recognized with the second Michelin star, the return of the Restaurant of the week could not have another protagonist: Belcanto, much more than a restaurant, a box of sensory experiences that made me travel through a world of different textures, aromas and flavors that I had never lived before ...

Since I was a little kid I lived the ilusion of christmas, the family celebration, food and gifts... The story of this post begins precisely on last Christmas Eve, when I received a postcard with one that was "The Gift," a dinner at Belcanto, the lab of Chef José Avillez, a Portuguese chef I really admire among other things by the way it treats many of ingredients of Portuguese traditional gastronomy and gives them an innovative twist putting our cuisine in the panorama of international haute cuisine.

Last January 18, just a couple of hours before our reservation anxiety started to rise, my extremely high expectations started to cause me a real fear of disappointment.  Yes, was completely wrong and I had no idea of what was about to happen .. .

As it was the first time I visited the restaurant and we wanted to taste the classics. This was not only because I wanted to taste the dishes that have been kept in the menu from season to season but also because what I've mentioned earlier, the connection to the flavors and products typical Portuguese cuisine, as can be the sea bass, shellfish and piglet.

Our experience started with several amuse-bouches from which I would like to highlight two: the trilogy of false olives that made me think of the times of José Avillez in the kitchens of El Bulli: A black olive tempura, explosive olive and a spectacular inverted Dry Martini, instead of the usual gin soaked with olive, this time we had the olive juice with a gin bubble in the middle and the other which made travel to my childhood to a chocolate called Ferrero Rocher, in this case made of foie gras with a butter cover with a gold leaf.

The garden of the goose that laid the golden eggs started the menu, an egg cooked at low temperature covered with a gold leaf, crispy bread and mushrooms. A fantastic game of textures and flavors that have radically changed my expectations of having a great meal and took me to the field of sensory experiences, that kind of life experiences will always remain in our memory.

Followed by the dip in the sea, the name says it all, a perfect cocktail of products, textures and flavours that I can only describe as pure sea... This was the dish that most impacted me, as it made travel several years ago to my biology and zoology classes where we visited the beach Avencas in the outskirts of Lisbon (in Parede, Portugal).

To end the main courses the reinvention of a typical Portuguese dish, Suckling pig revisited  with fried potatoes orange and salad. amazingly executed, with an extremely crispy skin of the sukling pig, which is achieved by a long cooking at low temperatures.
As a dessert the Mandarin a complex and refreshing dessert, which for me was clearly the least positive aspect of this meal.

More than negative opinion, as an opportunity for improvement It would be also important to have a wine pairing menu for this tasting menu of classics, as it already exists for the others.

If you are a frequent reader of this blog you have noticed that for the first time the photos were not shot by me, I confess that I was taken over by the emotions and left the mobile phone and notepad aside... so this whole post is based on memories of this magnificent experience that I lived there 11 months ago ...

Restaurant of the Week Pont' a Pé, Aljezur, Portugal

After spending a whole day looking for accommodation for our second week of vacations in the Southern coast of Portugal, we finally discovered an apartment in Aljezur and after several hours inside the car we only wanted to go to the beach as soon as possible and then have dinner in one of the village's restaurants.

We normally don't go to restaurants that don't make reservation, but we decided to wait, to be honest less than 10 minutes ...

Despite it had nothing to do with it, it might seem a revenge for each one of the minutes that we waited for a table, as a sudden uncertainty absorbed us and after asking Marta to bring a couple of fishes we decided to change completely our order...

We started with a dish of freshly cooked barnacles, a wonderful shooter of sea flavours and aromas, then some of the best razor clams I've ever tasted, really amazing and then we shared some little squids at Algarvian style. This fabulous meal was perfectly paired with the wine of this week here on the blog: Barranco Longo Grande Escolha 2013 one of the magnificent suggestions of Marta. I say one of, because the last one was a spectacular dish of typical deserts of the region, made of sweet potatoes.

Summing it up, a simple, typical and informal Algarve restaurant, with premium quality raw materials and an even better service from the Marta... what more can you ask for on holidays?

A Stage with many stories to tell...

Located in the Hotel Teatro (theatre), in Oporto, the Restaurant Palco (Stage) will take you into the world of arts and theatre . All details are carefully designed and in harmony , from the décor of the room and tables , the mix of lights to the suits of the staff. All conditions are thought so that actors, the best ingredients, will shine on perfect theatre masterpieces that are each of the dishes that you can taste in this restaurant .

Because sometimes the best plan is when you have no plan, this was one of those occasions... We were tired from the trip and the next day we had scheduled an early departure on our cruise through the waters of the Douro river, so we decided to look for something close to dinner. When we passed by Hotel Teatro door the michelin guide logo was a good indication about the masterpiece that we were about to taste .

We started by Braised Tuna in a pistachio bed with cauliflower puree and scallop (in the picture), then Maronese veal with foie, low temperature cooked eggs with potato cream and manchego cheese and semi-cured codfish with rice all accompanied by a wine from the Douro region , as it should be , Cottas red 2011

If you are looking for a modern and elegant restaurant with really good food in Oporto, this is the place...

Restaurant of the Week: São Rosas, Estremoz, Portugal

Located next to Estremoz Castle, São Rosas name refers to the legend of the miracle of roses awarded to Queen Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, who turned the bread into flowers.
São Rosas opened 20 years ago by Margarida Cabaço, mother of Tiago Cabaço, the produce of the wine of this week is undoubtedly a temple of Portuguese cuisine and an essential reference for getting the best out of the best raw products...

This temple was one of the main reasons for our passion for Estremoz. In October last year it was here that we had the first contact with the cuisine and wines of the city and, since then, it is a regular stop when we drive from Madrid to Portugal .

As starters we usually delight us with delicious scrambled eggs with asparagus or mushrooms filled with prawns and as main course an out of this world partridge that you should not miss. And obviously accompanied by Estremoz wines .

Important tips :
As you are in Alentejo doses are really generous for what should be taken into account when ordering.

Book in advance if you wish to avoid the heartbreak of having to choose an alternative if it is full...

Restaurant of the Week: Tokara

If you read the previous posts about our gastronomic experience in South Africa, you will know that in this post I will write about extreme quality meat and wine but, when you enter Tokara Restaurant something bigger is waiting for you: an excellent setting and an excellent chefRichard, a former EatOut SA Chef of the Year who brings your experience to another level...

We started with a Beef tartar and cured beef with sushi rice, lemon, kimchi, black garlic & spiced lemon emulsion and an exquisite tuna tartar also with sushi rice, watermelon and crispy biscuit. Then we had a Roasted duck with szechuan cucumber, sushi rice, pak choi, litchi & Cantonese sauce and an spectacular Pan-fried springbok with carrot ginger purée, croquettes, salted apricots, yoghurt sorbet & Japanese curry sauce...

This meal would't be so perfect without the excellent wines that we had: Tokara Walker bay Sauvignon Blanc and Tokara Director's reserve. If you are around Cape Town or Stellenbosch this is clearly a must go...

The Grillhouse, You will never forget its meat...

Maybe due to the fact that I haven't really involved myself on our last holidays planning, I left Madrid thinking almost only on wildlife and on the safari experience I was about to live...
And then, after 18 hours travelling and just a couple of hours in Johannesburg, this mindset completely changed... and I have now to correct the first sentence and add the amazing gastronomic experience we lived...

It may be difficult to explain, but if you are a meat lover like me, in the right moment you arrive the GrillHouse you feel that this is clearly a must go in South Africa and that you are about to experience an "another planet" meal... Just one tip for the next time you go to a Steakhouse: apart from the weight of the knife pick up the knife with one finger just in the middle between the blade and the handle. If it is heavy and it stays equilibrated you are dealing with a very special top quality knife, and it may mean you are about to taste same or better quality food...

In fact I was completely right! From the starters, of which I would highlight the snails to the main courses that, to be honest, were the best ribs and rump steak I've tasted the whole holidays and, no doubt, if not the best one of the best I've ever eaten!
If you sum to this a very correct staff attention a really interesting wine list, and most important a great group of friends, you get an excellent meal like we had.

After the meal I understood why our friend Juan made the dinner reservation in advance, we could not miss it! It is really a pity that it is so far away from Madrid...

A tip If you live around: visit the amazing shop, just in front of the restaurant and try do this amazing steaks at home!

Anna Blume, the time will stop while you enjoy your breakfast

This is the kind of places where time seems to stop... so, If you particularly enjoy a good breakfast or brunch, Anna Blume is clearly a must go in the city of Berlin!
When it is full the interior may get really noisy so I strongly advise you to get a table in the terrace, specially if you're looking for a romantic atmosphere. It has an exquisite menu that can go from a simple butter croissant or home-made crêpes to Anne blume specials for two, like the oleander that we tried or other three-tiered dishes... To complement this breakfast we had an orange and a carrot and orange juice, both excellent too!

Restaurant of the Week: Miyama Castellana, Madrid, Spain

If you are a Japanese food addict like me, Miyama Castellana is a mandatory stop in Madrid. Considered one of the best Japanese restaurants in Spanish capital, this is our main destination when we go out to eat some sushi... The raw material and respective preparation are top quality, reason why despite it is not the cheapest, for me, this has the best price-quality relation among the japanese restaurants of Madrid.
The service is on the same level of the food, very gentle, professional and fast!
The only but of this restaurant, is the noise when it is full... so deeple recomend you to try to get a table closest to the entrance door as possible.

Tree excellent wheels to travel... a lot!

One of the conversation topics that usually arise after the opening of a new space is the future you see for it, well, the title of this post is how to summarize my opinion: a team of three excellent cookers who, day by day bring the haute cuisine closer to their custumers.
Located in Barrio de las Letras in Madrid this restaurant brings us a mix of feelings, as if it was a book ...

You will find a space and a team relaxed and informal, that practically makes you feel at home ... The Menu, divided into three parts, takes us traveling from flavors and freshness of the products on the market in the first part specially dedicated to extreme high quality raw material, with simple but exquisit dishes, to  second part with more complex and creative dishes and then a trip through the flavors of the world ...
We started by a green tomatoes Gazpacho with oysters and herb salad, ceviche, the tuna tataki salad with green beans and ... although everything was great the best came at the end with an awsome portion of cannelloni and the potatoes filled with oxtail. All irrigated by the wine we published this weekTo end up at the top a marvellous dessert of peaches with mint cream and lemon ice cream ...

Oh, and the most important before leaving the contacts, to come back again, and a again...

O Dinis,The Fisherman Restaurant, Carvalhal Beach (Portugal)

The best way to describe my opinion about the restaurant O Dinis is that all summer Fridays that we go to Troia, we leave Madrid with the reservation for, 640 kilometers later, tasting the best fresh fish that you can eat...
Informal, relaxed and friendly, as its owner Dinis, this is one of the perfect places to end a summer afternoon, enjoying the fabulous sunset in front of the restaurant which makes it the perfect place to enjoy a great meal with your couple...

Yes, it is true! To all this you will still have to add the best grilled fish of the region, certainly one of the best we had the opportunity eat. The sea bass is the star of this restaurant where we also had this summer the opportunity to eat these wonderful sardines... Oh and you cannot leave without tasting the awesome chocolate mousse...

To be honest I cannot find more adjectives to describe this restaurant, just that I feel at home or at a friend's house...

Thank you Dinis! See you next weekend ...

Maye's Bistró, unique burgers in Madrid!

Last week I had a special request at home! We should go to a burger restaurant for dinner, so I started to look for new places to go outside "our 10 minutes public transport area" as August is perfect to use the car in Madrid. Although I thought that in August there would be no need to make reservation, we called to book a table in the terrace. What a wise decision, because when we arrived all the tables were booked, the first positive indicator of the quality of this restaurant...
As we went on a normal weekday dinner we only asked for two burgers: Mark Twain and Orson Wells, both with delicious home-made French fries...
The delicious food, excellent service in a terrace in a wonderfull summer night...could we ask for anything else?
An excellent surprise that entered directly for our top burger restaurants in Madrid...

Moratín, an hymn to Gastronomy!

Last week, I watched a video of a Chef Andoni Aduriz lesson where he spoke about cooking with love ... "What is it to cook with love? I

n practice, attention, care, to put all our effort in what we are preparing." We could use these words to describe and say that in this restaurant everything but everything is made with love ... We also felt this love in on how the eyes of the chef were shining and in the passion of his words when he was describing his recommendations from the menu.

Last friday, I was looking for a place I could make a last minute reservation for dinner, when without any recommendation, I found this restaurant and I was lucky to get the last available table in this intimate atmosphere illuminated by candlelight restaurant...
The two main reasons of our visit were to discover new wines, and to taste its Steak tartar, (if you read the previous posts will understand why ...). So in the rest we've just followed the recommendations: we started with started by a confit leeks with romesco sauce, after a marinated salmon in the house with vinaigrette and finally a delicious steak tartar. Regarding the wine, please visit wine of this week post where I talk about it.
One of the highlights of the meal was the explanation of the difference between the effect of tabasco and red pepper ... The red pepper has a retro effect which prevents the loss of sensitivity and  flavour, so you can enjoy all the condiments of your meal with a hot touch, without loosing anything!. Finally we had a half plank of cheeses to finish this wonderful gastronomic experience.

I think the best way to describe our experience was when we left saying goodbye to a friend that you don't see frequently: We have to see us more often

Beacoup! A bit of France in Madrid...

About two weeks ago I was looking for a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, and honestly, the recommendation of my friend Patri could not be better!

When we entered the first impression was that we could be entering a typical Portuguese or Spanish tavern, as space is composed of a long L-shaped bar along the whole left side and the back of the restaurant and the tables are placed in front of it. And when we opened the menu we found a whole world of fantastic dishes to try...

we only had clear that we would start with a couple of oysters and a flute of Champagne to celebrate, and at some point the meal would have to taste the steak tartar, a dish that simply love... So the rest of the meal we've just followed the recommendations: grilled octopus and, in a French restaurant it would be a sin to have a non French wine so we had Fleur la Chapelle.

I confess that after eating at the beach in Brazil those wonderful Oysters, it is difficult to reach the same level, but the oysters were a good start.

Then we had the desired steak tartar with an excellent meat extremely well chopped with knife, (which gives you a totally different texture when serving this dish with minced meat) and very well seasoned. Clearly one of the best I ever eaten. Finally a magnificent grilled octopus.

To finish the wine we ordered an excellent cheese table , which meant we finished already thinking about the return ...

I couldn't finishing this review without mentioning the service. In two words: Just Perfect!!! careful, relaxed, informal, they made us feel like we were at home with long-time friends ...

Definitely, a place to return ...

Flavours experience in Plaza de Perú, Madrid

Yesterday I understood why a Peruvian colleague recommended me this restaurant, everything we eat was great, especially the ceviche and the Starters...
We stayed in an area of high tables in the hallway that connects the kitchen to the two dining rooms, which allowed us to enjoy this in a more informal way and away from the noisy dinning room...

We were a group of 4 friends, all rookies in Peruvian food, so we opted to let us be guided by the kindly waiter... we started by sharing a ceviche, a Piqueo Criolo and a Piqueo Chifero as starters and shared a Lomo saltado another and Aji de Gallina as main dishes

If the main dishes were quite normal, starters were amazing, awsome, spectacular... So I recommend you to going to this restaurant with your friends and order several starters (piqueos or causas) to share ... For the next visit I will write about the desserts as this time  there was only room for a Pisco sour a "must have" in a Peruvian restaurant!

A fabulous Steak Tartare in Berlin...

It was kind of a storm outside and three days of "crazy tourism", we were looking for a place for dinner near the hotel. It was when using the 11870.com tripadvisor.com we found Entrecote ...

A fairly wide space, with nice decoration and a familiar touch where we ended up dining by candlelight ...

For dinner we shared two of the specialities  As it might be expected, the dish that gives name to the restaurant, an Entrecote, which was simply delicious and a delicious Steak tartare that almost dethroned the Restaurant Jota 5 in Madrid at the top of our preferences.

To finish an aspect which gathers both the best and worst of the restaurant: the service. The attention could not be better, in fact the process of preparing the Steak Tartare was all a fabulous and fun experience that made us feel at home from a friend as we prepared this wonderful treasure... on the other hand if you are looking for a quick meal, it's better to look for another place, because you will have to be patient...

Although it was a bit expensive for a restaurant in Berlin, it worths every euro you pay for the meal...

Alcaravea Lounge Bar

Opened in 2011, the restaurant Alcaravea Gaztambide was the last to open of three restaurants with the same name. With a modern but at the same casual environment this restaurant was thought to earn its space and become one of today's gastronomic references Madrid.

Personally I define Alcaravea as a space designed to share ... Following the precious advices of the staff we decided to share several dishes, which proved to be a very wise decision as it were very well served

The other keyword that would utilize diversity of flavours and dishes, the extensive list in and out of the menu... We started with a symphony of mushrooms and a variety of croquettes and as "second", as they say here in Spain fresh squid grilled and duck magret with onion confit and cranberry sauce.

Don't leave without trying the grilled octopus, I tried it last weekend and it is just fabulous...

As the starter of mushrooms, this experience ran as if it was a perfect symphony ... good food, good atmosphere and good service, the three essential elements of a meal!

Restaurant C'an Olga, Es Mercadal - Menorca

If you are fed up of the touristic restaurants along the coast, C'an Olga is a really interesting option. I must confess I have a special atraction for gastronomy in the interior, I think it's common sense: if you don't go for the views you will only return by the greatness of its gastronomy...

The truth is that our dinner at C'an Olga was the easiest thing in our vacations... Gabriel, who recommended us to go there, suggested also two starters, so we only had to choose the main dish, grilled John-dory with garlic Sauce.

Despite the main dish was very good, for me the stars of this restaurant are the starters! We tasted an excellent onion stuffed with meat and one kind of Spanish sausage called Sobrasada and a marvellous aubergine millefeuille!

Can Bep, Like dining in your Grandma's home...

Once more we could confirm one of our travelling rules: always look for a restaurant out of the turistic area...

After the disappointment of the dinner in the port on the first night, fortunately we found Can Bep on Tripadvisor and as it was just by our hotel we decided to try it...

Unless you have any allergy its very easy to choose what to eat here. As a starter you must taste the grilled mussels. If you doubt read it in trip advisor  foursquare or 11870.com tips and the restaurant staff won't forget to suggest this magnificent, exquisite starter...

Despite all the suggestions I must confess I doubted to choose it as till then I didn't like mussels... It remembered me a lunch in an Indian Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, as till then I wasn't able to digest spicy food and I ended that vacations eating spicy fried rice for breakfast...

Other interesting starter onions filled with dusky sea perch and shrimps, and as main dish we shared a very good fried monkfish with garlic sauce, you can also ordered it grilled if you want to...

To end another must try: Condensed milk pie, like the mussels you will remember it till the next time you come to this restaurant that in our case was the following day!

It was not possible to end this review without commenting the sympathy and attention of the restaurant staff that make you feel like eating in your Grandma's home...

Dona Bia - a Rice Temple, Comporta, Portugal

On the Road that connects Comporta to Carvalhal, located by the rice fields, Restaurant Dona Bia is able to transform the excellent raw material of the region into unforgettable meals!
Source: www.flavorsandsenses.com

Behind the horrible mosquito net, but essential to avoid the implacable attack from the mosquitoes of the region, hides a restaurant that, despite the chaotic environment in August, continues to secure the loyalty of its clients.

Despite the rice dishes are the most recommended places, (also because it is the main product of the region), I must confess I always choose the same every time I go to Dona Bia. To start a salad, this time we had a Dog-whelk in a vinaigrette sauce (5€) and then the fabulous Moon fish Fillets with Spawns’ Alentejo Dry Soup (Bread past flavoured with olive oil, garlic and coriander), an exquisite and unforgettable regional dish!

MEATing, A temple of good meat

MEATing is one of these restaurants which the name tells you perfectly what you can expect from it! It's a perfect place for a meat lovers group to meet...
Despite I went there after reading metropoli guide and 11870.com recommendations, I still went out surprised and thinking about our next visit.

As it was the first time we went there we asked the waiter for some help, and the truth is that It couldn't be a better option. An expert on his restaurant raw material and so nice that also seemed to be part of our group.

We started with an a fresh tuna belly with tomato to share and then the star of the restaurant and if not the best it is surely on the podium of the best meat I've tasted in Madrid.

The room very pleasant, with space enough from the other tables and the perfect extraction avoids you to leave with the unpleasant smell of food...

Definitely a place to return...
